New Lount Colliery Centenary 9 February 2025




To commemorate the centenary of New Lount Colliery, Newbold Coleorton Heritage Group held two events as part of Heritage month in September 2024. On Friday 13th September, village residents past and present were treated to a musical extravaganza recounting the history of the colliery in a packed St Matthew's church. On Saturday 14th September heritage group members dressed up in period costume and led tours around the nature reserve to see points of interest including the Pit Head, Pit Baths, Weigh Bridge and the area where the tub and train tracks can be seen.
New Lount Colliery opened on 9 February 1924. On the centenary of this special day, members of Newbold Coleorton Heritage Group met members of Coleorton Heritage group at New Lount Nature Reserve to see the silver spade used by Lady Beaumont to dig the first sod of earth.
