Frank Hodges, Chairman of the Leicestershire Colliery and Pipe Company ran New Lount Colliery and Newbold Brick Company. Hodges had a profound influence on the industrial and social development of Newbold.
Much of the land used for coalmining around Newbold was leased from the Beaumont family of Coleorton Hall. Sir George Beaumont, 11th Baronet, had significant business interests in New Lount Colliery.
John Lakin opened Staunton Colliery, later named Worthington Colliery, in 1885. Despite its name, the colliery was located in Newbold. John died in a tragic mining accident in 1886 leaving the mine to his wife Elizabeth.
Benjamin Walker (1785-1861) was an important pioneer of coal mining in and around Newbold and the surrounding area. His mining and tramway enterprises significantly shaped Newbold’s coal mining heritage and transport systems.
