As a result of intense mining and quarrying activity in the parish, tramways were built to transport goods to and from Newbold and Worthington to nearby towns. Following the introduction of steam locomotion, horse-drawn tramways were eventually replaced with railways.
Old maps show roads and numerous footpaths connecting Newbold to other villages in the parish and beyond. It was commonplace for workers to walk to work along these footpaths. Roads were improved as industry grew and Newbold even had its own haulage company providing lorries to transport coal, bricks and pipes.
